Strong Thunderstorm & Gusty Winds in Poughkeepsie NY, June 6, 2024
On June 6th, 2024, a large stacked cyclone was in place over Ontario Canada with a negatively tilted trough extending southeastward from this feature over the Great Lakes. In southern NY, a warm front passed through the area early in the morning, followed by a cold front during the evening. Within the warm sector ahead of the cold front mild to moderate instability and forcing from the approaching front allowed a broken line of thunderstorms to develop over central NY before traveling eastward into the Hudson Valley. While speed shear (or increase in winds with height) was not particularly high, there was a decent amount of directional shear with height. Winds at the surface were out of the south with these winds veering to westerly by a altitude of 3 km. These wind profiles favored cyclonic updraft rotation and transient supercell characteristics within the valley.
I intercepted one of these cells right next to Shadows on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie around 5pm local time. Heavy rain ahead of the updraft made viewing the storm structure difficult, but the storm did produce some nice cloud to ground lightning bolts along with sub-severe wind gusts estimated to be around 40 mph .

On Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, a severe thunderstorm outbreak was expected across eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey. During the 9th and 10th of May 2024, the sun unleashed several X-class solar flares. These flares were accompanied by large Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), which impacted the Earth's atmosphere during the following day. These events resulted in a G5 Geomagnetic Storm, the largest in over 20 years, that produced vibrant auroral displays across the planet. Displays were seen as far south as Florid...

This video is a precursor to a more extensive video I plan on doing of the eclipse... Totality of a total solar eclipse is among one of the most incredible natural events one can witness. If you've never experienced totality, it's impossible to understand what you're missing. Seeing just a partial eclipse, even at 99% is not even remotely comparable. It's not just the moon blocking out the sun....

A localized outbreak of several discrete supercells occurred in eastern New Mexico during the evening of May 27th, 2023. This continued the nearly weeklong severe weather outbreak in the region as persistent ridging over the central plains allowed for a nearly stationary upper-level trough to set up upstream over the southern Rockies. This feature provided ample mid-level wind shear as well as ...

On Thursday September 7th, 2023, the SPC placed most of eastern NY under a Slight Risk of Severe Weather. As a cold front approached at the surface, dewpoints near 70 degrees and diurnal surface heating resulted in moderate levels of instability. Additionally, a tightening horizontal temperature gradient occurred as a weak upper-level trough interacted with a blocking ridge off the east coast. ...

    What town exactly was the hook echo located relative to where you were? You mentioned you were north of it.

    • @storm12weather
      @storm12weather 17 днів тому

      The hook passed about 5 miles to the southwest, through Berkeley Heights, Westfield, Linden, and then Carteret before moving over southern Staten Island. There was another supercell before this that passed just to the north about an hour earlier as well.

    • @DynamicDuo795
      @DynamicDuo795 17 днів тому

      @storm12weather , nice. The last supercell that struck our region was back on August 13th of last year. A tornado warning was issued for Somerset, Union, Middlesex, and Hudson counties. I did observe a confirmed hook echo over Roselle Park, NJ, not far from where you filmed this storm, right after it passed over me while I was filming it from home. However, it failed to produce a tornado and continued northeast into Staten Island and Brooklyn. Since 2021, we've definitely experienced very strong thunderstorms, including supercells and tornado activity, which has also greatly increased as well. We've had more twisters pop up than what is considered normal or average for our region. Especially strong tornadoes. The Mullica Hill event in 2021 was one of the strongest tornadoes in New Jersey's history. Confirmed EF3 twister. We shouldn't be getting tornadoes that strong.

      Thank you! I use a Nikon D7500 and had a 20 to 80 mm adjustable lens. I use it for photos but it takes great video too. I typically film storm footage at 1080p 60fps instead of 4k 30fps because the higher framerate makes the motion of the rain and wind look much smoother.

    A positive lightning strike like this woke me up from dead sleep when I was a kid. At that age, I was terrified of thunder, so the explosion caused me PTSD. The next night, I suffered a terrible nightmare about it, and I woke up shaking violently. I was simultaneously frozen in place and I couldn’t stop shaking for a few seconds after I woke up. My baby sister was sleeping in my bedroom with me, so I crawled into bed with her, and then I calmed down enough to go back to sleep. Now I’m not as scared of thunder as I used to be, but to this day, I never want to hear a sound like that again.

    the bulbs in those parking lot lights ( shoe box luminares ) are probably shot now, the combination of the arc tubes being violently rattled round and constantly cutting and restriking probably has shortened they're life span quite a bit. in any case all those lights will need to be relamped (to have they're bulbs replaced) which will only ad to the cost of the damage.

      Hello. I do occasionally upload 4k videos. The major issue I have right now is the cropped sensor my camera has with 4k videos. When I film in 4k, it's hard to get wide angle shots. I also generally go for 2k at 60fps as opposed to 4k at 30fps, because the video is much smoother. Generally 60fps is better when there is a lot of motion, especially if I'm in a storm filming wind and rain.
